Why does The City of Coffs Harbour play a role in tourism?

Because of its importance as an economic driver, the tourism industry is one of the few sectors that councils get directly involved in through their role in supporting visitor information, marketing and promotion, infrastructure provision, regulation, and destination management.

Federal Government body Tourism Australia encourages visitors to come to Australia. State Government bodies such as Destination NSW work to attract visitors to NSW.

The City’s Economic Development and Tourism Section gets involved in marketing the Coffs Coast destination and supporting businesses to bring visitors to this LGA. This is why our Draft Tourism Strategy aligns with state and national tourism strategies.

    What does ‘visitor economy' mean?

The visitor economy encompasses tourism's contribution to employment, investment, infrastructure development, exports, provision of temporary labour and social vibrancy. It takes into account economic activity much broader than that traditionally described as 'tourism and events'.

The Coffs Coast visitor economy comprises all local businesses, products and services supplied for those travelling to our region for holidays, education, business, and visiting friends and relatives (both domestic and international).

What is visitor servicing and why is it important?

    6. Social media posts, targeted campaigns and messenger service
    7. 70 visitor brochure points across the Coffs Coast and beyond
    8. New digital information kiosks in seven locations planned from late 2023.

How many visitor information outlets are on the Coffs Harbour LGA?

There are 7 Visitor Information Outlets around the LGA where people can speak to a local face-to-face and get physical information like maps and referrals.

Refer to the map for Visitor Outlet locations.

Why did the old visitor information centre close?

The old visitor information centre at the Big Bana closed in 2017 due to low foot traffic numbers and growing online digital sources of information, like websites and booking.com  being used by more visitors.

The Draft Strategy also includes and action to Work with State Government to enhance Jetty Foreshore open spaces ( eg. a super playground) and to strengthen its identity as a recreation and tourist destination. (Page 16)

What does the ECO Destination certification mean?

ECO Destination certification is a process to ensure that tourism in a natural area focuses on optimal resources use, leaves minimal impact on the environment and offers interesting ways to learn about the environment with operators that use resources wisely, contribute to conserving the environment and help local communities.
