Community Engagement seeking ideas for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Actions

The City’s Sustainability Advisory Committee has been exploring ways to further involve the community in climate change mitigation and adaptation. As part of this work, the Committee recently completed Growing Together: Save Money, Build Resilience, Strengthen Community, a proposal for a community-led initiative in partnership with the City of Coffs Harbour. The document is intended to commence community conversations and encourage ideas for local mitigation and adaptation actions.

What is the Growing Together: Save Money, Build Resilience, Strengthen Community About?

This draft document presented a community-led resilience initiative developed by the Committee. It outlines a phased plan to help Coffs Harbour residents save money, build resilience, and strengthen community connections in response to converging pressures such as fuel disruption, rising living costs, climate hazards, and disaster fatigue. The draft document proposes five key pillars:

  1. Information Sharing – including a Coffs Resilience Map and improved climate communication.
  2. Skill Building – practical workshops on food growing, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and foraging.
  3. Seed & Plant Libraries – expanding the existing seed library and creating a new plant-sharing library.
  4. Grow the Grower – supporting local food producers through mapping, promotion, knowledge exchange, and pathways for new growers.
  5. Community Activation – awareness campaigns, market activations, food swaps, seasonal events, and an annual festival.

The draft document recommends a phased rollout from 2026–2027, beginning with stakeholder engagement and seed funding, followed by grant development, a public launch, and ongoing activation. The City has $10,000 allocated in the 2026/27 Operational Plan for a relevant project if required.
