Consultation has concluded
We have revised our Renewable Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan (REERP) to help the organisation reach its renewable energy and emissions reductions goals for 2030. We would love to hear feedback from the community on the proposed targets in the Plan and our pathway forward!
What is the REERP?
Council adopted the Renewable Energy and Emission Reduction Plan (Plan) in 2016 to meet Council’s corporate renewable energy and emissions reduction targets. The first phase of Council’s REERP is now close to completion and a review of the REERP maps out the phases over the next 10 to 15 years as per the commitments in the original REERP.
What has been revised in the REERP?
The plan has been revised, in order to prioritise the actions, sense check and update the targets, and ensure that the plan is in line with the technological developments available at present and predicted into the future.
Switching to electric vehicles that use renewable power and expanding Council’s current rollout of solar power (see Powering Ahead project) at key facilities are among the key proposals in the revised REERP.
The revised REERP also explores a net zero emissions target based on a science-based carbon budget, in line with the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommendations. The REERP allows Council to show leadership locally in ways to help mitigate the overall impacts of climate change and it also translates into significant cost and efficiency savings
An independent review of the Plan also outlines further steps that can be taken to reach:
Reduction in annual corporate emissions (tonnes CO2-e) from 2010 levels by 50% by 2025;
The use of 100% renewables by the organisation by 2030.
