In 2021, the City of Coffs Harbour rolled out a three-year remote rescue tube program. This initiative involved installing remote rescue tube facilities at key access points to beach locations across the Coffs Harbour region. Since the rescue tubes have been installed, there have been at least 13 rescues by bystanders.
The aim of the project is to reduce drowning incidents, in particular by bystander drownings. Unfortunately, a number of drownings which occur involve bystanders who get into trouble themselves when attempting a rescue. Having a purpose-designed flotation device is considered a critical success factor for bystander rescuers in these scenarios.
This project has been supported by the City of Coffs Harbour, Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour, Pink Silks, local Surf Life Saving Clubs, Coffs Coast Regional Park and several local businesses.
Have your say
We are checking in with the community to see if you have:
You noticed the rescue tubes at our beaches?
You would feel confident to use one in case of an emergency?
Whether they make you feel safer when at the beach?
Our friendly City lifeguards will be speaking with people at our beaches
Consultation closes Tuesday 2 July 2024.

To assist with the evaluation of the roll-out and to help inform the ongoing maintenance and promotion of the program, we are seeking community feedback through the online survey.

Rescue Tube roll-out
Rescue Tubes are flotation devices that can help someone drowning stay afloat. Find our more about the Coffs Harbour Rescue Tube roll-out.
If someone’s in trouble in the water, remember:
• Always call 000 first
• Get a surfer’s assistance if possible
• ONLY attempt a rescue if you’re a STRONG swimmer with a flotation device (Rescue Tube, surfboard or bodyboard).
• If you’re not a strong swimmer and a strong swimmer isn’t around, call 000.
• NEVER attempt a rescue without a flotation device.
