Please refer to the draft concept plan in Documents and Images sections

Sawtell community's requests to revise planning for Boronia Park and locate a new amenities block at the southern car park near the beach have been supported by Coffs Harbour City Council.

Council thanks all residents who have participated for their interest and involvement in the recent consultations regarding the Boronia Park draft masterplan and the future location of the new amenities building.

Council has listened to the concerns and aspirations expressed by Sawtell residents regarding the location of the amenities building.

Council is now taking action on your behalf, revising planning for the location of the new amenities, to accommodate the requests of the majority of residents who lobbied and/or participated in the Have Your Say survey.

Survey participants voted 39-1 in favour of locating the new amenities building in the southern car park, in preference to the other potential locations.

Council will now redesign the car park to facilitate the location of the new amenities building in the location preferred by the community.

Boronia Park is a significant relaxation and recreation area for locals and visitors alike. It is important that Council’s long-term investment in the site reflects both current and future needs and aspirations.

The ongoing fundraising and volunteer work by the Bonville Sawtell Lions Club to improve and enhance Boronia Park is a clear indication of the significant value the community places on this unique location, tucked between the Tasman Sea and Bonville Creek.

More than 410 individuals visited the Have Your Say page for Boronia Park; 194 people downloaded or viewed the information; 75 people downloaded the documents and; a total of 40 people Registered and completed the Survey.

Community priorities for other park improvements according to the Survey are, in order of priority: 1 – car park renewal; 2 – new shower; 3 – picnic shelter; 4 – new beach stairs; 5 – viewing deck.

Council looks forward to continuing to work with the community on the future improvements for Boronia Park.

RE: Overnight camping in car park

This issue is a general traffic issue and would needed to be considered by the Local Traffic Committee. Restricted parking signs are used in some parking areas to discourage the type of overnight camping you have referred to. They allow Police to issue infringement notices when these instances occur. I have inspected the corner you refer to and would agree that vehicles need to slow down considerably because of the nature of the bend in the road.

Convex mirrors are rarely used these days as they can make it difficult to judge true distances with and are considered dangerous in some instances. RMS which Is now called Transport for NSW are the regulatory authority who adminster the NSW Road Rules. Before Council can make any changes to traffic management infrastructure including compliance signs etc it must take these matters to the Local Traffic Committee for consideration. This committe consists of Transport for NSW, Police, Local State MP's office, an elected local Councillor, transport companies and community representation.

Council will conduct a sight distance check and inspection of this intersection shortly to assess if any other measures can be considered to improve sight lines. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Andrew Smith

Is the amenities building at the bonville headland being considered for the upgrade as well?

Hi Matt. Council is progressively upgrading amenities throughout the local government area. Upgrade of the Bonville Headland amenities is not scheduled as part of the 2020/21 program of works and it is not part of the Boronia Park project. Regards, Damon

  • Share Hi again Andrew. In the plan for the upgrade of the park, I can’t see any position or location for the mobile food vendors that have occupied this park over recent years. Can you confirm that this practice will cease? As your own notes state the village is 1200m walk/drive away: if the park is for the community & visitors, and I agree, surely commercial vendors should not be part of the plan moving forward? Hi Matt. There is one food vendor who holds a licence/lease with Council to operate from his van adjacent to Boronia Park. Mobile food vans are popular distributors at a number of our beaches, and they are entitled to seek a licence/lease to operate. Regards, Damon.

  • Share I note that the footpaths will be widened around the park For better access for pedestrians to the park and the beach and carpark and the headland. What about the footpath between first ave and Boronia park? This is the gateway to this park and the current footpath is in Very bad condition and is very heavily used. The park and the upgrade are a great link between the village and the beach/headland I would believe that the link road (Boronia st) and it’s footpath are high priority? Hi Matt, no there are no plans to upgrade the footpath between First Avenue and Boronia Park as part of the Boronia Park Masterplan works. That is a narrow section of road corridor. Regards, Damon.

  • Share Hello Council, The amenities block should be near the car park, not on neighbours’ boundaries, especially when there is no need and there is plenty of room in the park. If they put them in the proposed location, there would need to be a path straight through our green space where many residents and holiday makers play cricket and ball sports. Located near the car park families could take children to the bathroom and wash them down before getting in the car to go home. The existing showers are used often however I rarely see anyone use the toilets, possibly because they are not accessible. There is no parking close to the amenities block so people have to park in the car park and walk across the park – currently there is no path across the park and there is never any parking on Boronia Street There has recently been tables and chairs cemented in, why remove these - this I see as a waste of rate payers’ money. It is a good idea to upgrade the car parking space. Disable parking is a must however it should be near the car park and toilets because Boronia Street is a nightmare in summer and I believe this location currently designated is extremely dangerous. The main issue is the toilets should not be on ratepayers boundaries. Gérard O'Sullivan asked over 4 years ago

    Hi Gerard.

There are several factors which influence the location of the new amenities. The purpose of displaying the Draft Concept Plan is to capture comments like the one you have made to assist Council determine a final Concept Plan for the Park. There is a section in the short survey where you can register your preference in relation to the amenities facility.
