The population of the Coffs Harbour Local Government Area (LGA), like many other regions in Australia, is ageing. According to the 2016 Census, the proportion of the Coffs Harbour LGA aged 65 years and older is 22.1%, which is greater than the proportion for New South Wales (16.2%).

People experience the ageing process in different ways at different times. Ageing is affected by physical and social environment, health, economic and life experiences as much as it is by chronological age. This Draft Strategy focuses on people in the Coffs Harbour LGA who are 65 years old and over, and people who identify as Aboriginal who are 55 years and over.

Coffs Harbour City Council is committed to providing sound planning to support and embrace the opportunities presented by the changing demographics of the community. The Coffs Harbour LGA Draft Positive Ageing Strategy 2020-2024 provides a plan which aims to maximise opportunities for older people to participate and contribute in all aspects of community life in a sustainable and safe way. The Strategy is based on current research into ageing populations, as well as consultations with local residents and service providers.

Following Council endorsement, the Draft Positive Ageing Strategy 2020-2024 was placed on public exhibition for 28 days (from May 18 to June 15) on this Have Your Say page. The exhibition was promoted via Council’s website, with advertisements running in the Coffs Harbour Advocate newspaper and through our Social Platforms. Five submissions were received and the Positive Ageing Strategy 2020-2024 was formally adopted by Council on 9 July 2020.
