The City of Coffs Harbour (City) is inviting community feedback on a proposal to reinstate the historic 1923 Woolgoolga Great War Memorial (Memorial).

The Woolgoolga RSL sub-Branch and Rotary would like to see the reinstatement of the Memorial at the most suitable site in the town.

City of Coffs Harbour Council supports the reinstatement of the Memorial in principle. The City will consult the community to gauge community support for the Memorial’s reinstatement and where the community would like it to be located.

The City will review the feedback provided during the consultation and prepare a report for Council’s consideration.

If the community supports the reinstatement of the Memorial, the City will work with the Woolgoolga RSL sub-Branch on its design.

Proposed Memorial design

The original Memorial is a 4.4-metre tall sandstone and granite structure featuring marble name plaques. It would be placed on a 3m x 3m concrete base, with the total combined height of the Memorial and the concrete base being 5.01 metres.

The total area of the Memorial site would be subject to further design work being undertaken for the site selected. Any future structure to be reinstated may be subject to further approvals.

Why your input matters

We want to hear from you. This consultation is about understanding if the community supports the reinstatement of the 1923 Woolgoolga Great War Memorial on public land, and if it is supported, understanding the community’s preference for its potential location.

If reinstated, the Great War Memorial would become a significant local landmark. Its important that any decisions about the Memorial are informed by the views of the community.

Exploring location options

Three potential locations for the Memorial have been identified, including two sites within the Woolgoolga Beach Reserve and another site on the corner of Beach and Wharf St, Woolgoolga. Please refer to the attachments (on the right-hand side of this page) to view these site locations on a map.

  • Option 1 - Woolgoolga Beach Reserve – the site proposed by the Northern Beaches Memorial Project Group, preferred because of its prominence, and because it is 'facing the dawn'

  • Option 2 - Woolgoolga Beach Reserve - alternative option identified by City that may have less impact on the openness of the Beach Reserve and potentially offer greater flexibility for hosting public events

  • Option 3 - The area that has been identified as a potential civic plaza in the adopted Woolgoolga Town Centre Master Plan

We’re asking the community to provide their feedback to help determine the preferred site.
