In consultation with community stakeholders, Council will improve the quality and use of the public spaces currently impacted at times by street crime and anti-social behaviour. Installation of security lighting and CCTV through the SafeCoffs Project will enable safer use of these sites and cultivate a more family-friendly, social, recreational and economic environment where community safety issues are not a barrier to the use of public spaces and access to facilities.

In 2018/19, the installation of CCTV and lighting across the Toormina Sports Precinct - including the Oval, Skate Park and Velodrome - will support the safer use of these spaces and the reduction of risks.

In 2019/20, the installation of CCTV and security lighting across the Coffs Harbour City Square, Council Car Park and adjoining laneway will provide the community with a safer and more liveable city centre.

The Federally-funded grant, from the Safer Communities Fund (Department of Industry, Innovation and Science) will provide $900,000 for improved safety outcomes through the installation of CCTV and lighting at the key locations identified.

SafeCoffs will enable Council to respond to safety needs identified in the community strategic plan and reported concerns that relate to personal safety in public places.

The locations identified have experienced reports of street crime, anti-social behaviour, harassment, vandalism and youth-related crime.

Enabling CCTV surveillance will be a deterrent to offenders and will help Police investigations to be more successful in identifying people involved in any incidents. Lighting will ensure the community has improved visibility and sense of safety in these public spaces.

Council has been working with the Police to identify priority locations for surveillance and lighting for crime prevention.  Safer by Design principles have been followed with both the areas being assessed under the CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) system, and responses based on this assessment.
