Cultural & Civic Space - August 8th Council Decision

Cultural and Civic Space – Council Decision

Council is pleased to announce that last night Councillors resolved to proceed with the Cultural and Civic Space Project. This is very positive news for the Coffs Harbour community and visitors.

To recap, the new building will include a Regional Gallery, Central Library, Regional Museum, the Family History Group, multipurpose meeting rooms (including use as Council Chambers), co-working space, shop, café, function space, customer service area, Council staff office accommodation and car parking. It will create a vibrant cultural and civic precinct in the heart of Coffs Harbour and will be accessible, inclusive, attractive and welcoming to all.

It is important to recognise the great work done by all involved to bring this project to life. Including all those who submitted to the process – community, volunteers, staff and the project team.

What happens next?

  • The Development Application will be submitted to the Department of Planning & Environment where we expect the process will take between 6 – 9 months.

  • Detailed Design (taking the current Schematic design drawings and turning them into detailed construction plans) will start now and will take approximately 12 months.

  • There will be further stakeholder engagement over the next 12 months.

  • The sale of Council assets (Rose Avenue, Rigby House, Castle St and the Museum) process will begin.

  • Construction is planned to start in 2020 for completion in 2022.

  • Planning and preparation of exhibitions and programs for the gallery, museum and library for opening.

  • The opening of the Cultural and Civic Space is planned for 2022.

Council is looking forward to working with the Coffs Harbour Community in bringing this exciting project to fruition.
